Understanding a vSAN iSCSI target

VMware vSAN works as a datastore with its own filesystem (depending on the vSAN version) and each VMDK is a file descriptor that points to a vSAN object.

But for the external physical workload, you can use the vSAN iSCSI target to "export" part of the vSAN space as a traditional iSCSI LUN.

Supported operating systems for the vSAN iSCSI target include the following:

  • Microsoft Windows 10, Windows Server 2016, 2012 R2, 2012, 2008 R2, 2008
  • RedHat RHEL 7, RHEL 6, RHEL 5
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 12, SLES 11 SP4/SP3/SP1
Use of the vSAN iSCSI target for providing storage directly to vSphere ESXi is not currently supported.
