Performing NFS v3 and v4.1 configurations

ESXi supports NFS datastore using NFS 3 or NFS 4.1 (starting with vSphere 6.0) protocols, both over TCP (by default, NFS is on the UDP transport protocol). The difference between those two types of NFS will be explained in Objective 3.4.

The first step is to configure on the NFS server a share and export it so that it can then be mounted on the ESXi hosts.

Like software iSCSI, to use NFS, you need to first configure the ESXi host with a proper VMkernel and virtual network configuration to access a remote NFS server.

There isn't an NFS service that you can select in a VMkernel adapter. We will be selecting the interface with the closest routing rule (usually, this is the first in the same network).

The NFS datastore is a special type of datastore, because you do not need to format the NFS volume with a local filesystem, such as VMFS.

For more information, see the vSphere 6.5 Storage guide (https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/com.vmware.vsphere.storage.doc/GUID-9282A8E0-2A93-4F9E-AEFB-952C8DCB243C.html).

More details on how to mount an NFS datastore will be provided later.
