PREFACE

This is the third in a trilogy of publications published by Dr. Richard Wong. This enables an even more vivid representation of Hong Kong's lost architectural heritage and causes us to lament that more emphasis has not been placed on the conservation of our built environment.
I was first drawn to Dr. Wong's first two books when we were looking for illustrative material for a project upon which my company was engaged.HSBC had commissioned us and supporting consultants in 2013 to revamp the plaza beneath their main building at 1, Queen's Road Central. The design that was developed encompassed a heritage theme and included glass display panels that depicted the history of the Central Business District and Hong Kong. Dr. Wong's permission to use his drawings of the various generations of the HSBC was quickly procured. These have added considerably to the graphic quality of the project.
This new volume of historic buildings is even more remarkable in that it has been produced by an environmental scientist and not an architect. This to my mind has brought a new perspective on the character of the historic buildings depicted in Dr.Wong's book. The buildings are depicted in copious detail which reveals their character and expression. This was a further reason why we sought to use Dr. Wong's drawings on the HSBC Project.
The new volume will appeal to, and be accessible to, all regardless of profession. Whilst we have lost many of the marvellous buildings that Dr. Wong has drawn, he, at least provides with an important record of the vast diversity of wonderful buildings that helped to circumscribe Hong Kong's past rich historic urban character.
