STUDY QUESTIONS

1. What should be the prognosis in this case?
2. What are the different characteristics of the remaining damp-heat and collateral stasis during the follow-up?
3. What details warrant attention with regard to the care for this case?

Answers

1. This was a chronic case of scleritis with frequent reoccurrence over six months, resulting from wind-damp-heat attacking the eyes. With the correct differentiation and treatment, this case would improve gradually. If not treated, the disease would go deeper and lead to a blue color appearing in the sclera (late-stage scleritis), and ultimately severely affect the vision.
2. Upon follow-up, there were slightly bulging nodules in the sclera of the left eye. The color was dark purple and the tongue was dark red. All these signs indicated blood stasis in the collaterals, whereas the thin yellow greasy tongue coating and wiry soggy pulse indicated residual damp-heat.
3. This case can be categorized as damp-heat attacking the eyes, so in daily life, the patient should eat less spicy, hot and greasy food, pay attention to weather changes and avoid being in a damp environment to prevent exacerbating the condition.
